Special Education

Special education refers to the adapted teaching methods, materials, and environments designed to meet the individual educational needs of children with disabilities or exceptional learning requirements. In India, the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD) mandate inclusive education for all children, making a foundational understanding of special education essential for every teacher.

Kaliammal College of Education incorporates special education principles within its B.Ed. and M.Ed. curricula, preparing student-teachers to identify diverse learning needs, adapt instruction accordingly, and work collaboratively with families, support staff, and special educators to ensure every child participates meaningfully in school life.

Research in special education at the college focuses on inclusive classroom strategies, differentiated instruction, assistive technology, identification of learning disabilities, and the development of teacher competencies for supporting children with special educational needs (SEN) in mainstream Tamil Nadu schools.
